Why Abu Dhabi comes out cheaper

  • Health insurance for dependants. In Abu Dhabi, employers must insure one spouse and up to three children. In Dubai, you usually pay for them yourself, which can be several thousand dirhams a year.
  • Lower housing fee. Expat tenants pay a 3% municipality fee in Abu Dhabi against a 5% housing fee in Dubai.
  • Tolls and driving. Darb tolls in Abu Dhabi are generally lighter on a typical commute than Salik in Dubai.

Where Dubai wins

Dubai has far more choice: more jobs, more schools at every price point, more neighbourhoods and a much bigger metro network. If you cannot drive yet, Dubai is easier. Rents in popular Abu Dhabi areas like Al Reem, Yas and Saadiyat have also risen quickly, so the gap depends heavily on where you live.

How to decide

Most people do not choose between the two freely: the job decides. But if you have a choice, or your company has offices in both, compare the package. A slightly lower salary in Abu Dhabi can leave you with the same money at the end of the month once insurance and fees are counted.
